Advocacy: ADding your VOiCe About Concern for Your child's education to the debate = ADVOCACY
Our PTA hopes to keep you updated on the latest facts and information involving the education of our children and our school, be it in policy or announcements from the WCPSS school system, our funding through Wake Commissioners, or our local town and even State legislation.
A recent Board Advisory Council/ BAC meeting covered Math Options which is important for all fifth grade students when the recommendation is being made to the 6th grade math class. This determination sets the probable path for the math courses that they will take in middle and high school.
Many parents attended an interesting BAC8/Board Advisory Council meeting on Nov. 16 and joined in on the conversation about current and proposed grading systems in WCPSS. The elementary school’s standard based report card grading system was a large topic of questions. Due to the correct WCPSS staff person not being at the meeting, these concerns were not addressed. If you would like this to occur in another meeting, please let Nancy Caggia know ( nc3nbc@aohttp://www.dde-pta.org/node/add/pagel.com ) and she will request our BAC to cover it at another meeting. WCPSS recently put up a Parent Vision on report cards at http://www.wcpss.net/announcements/archives/2009/11/parentvision_re.html
Due to a State Board of Ed Policy, our High Schools can not change to a 1-4 numbered grading system, but how that grade is calculated is being reviewed in pilots in middle and high schools. The essence of the conversation is whether work habits should be included in the grade, or if the grade should just reflected what was learned or achieved. Debates are being held on whether homework, cheating, retests and group work, etc. should affect a grade.
If you have any comments or want the BAC meeting minutes draft, please email Nancy Caggia at nc3nbc@aol.com.
